Volumes Features

Create and extend your volumes in the NETWAYS Cloud. Choose block devices on our multi-zoned Ceph storage for maximum availability. Make snapshots or backups at any time or have them scheduled.

Performance

With Cloud volumes come the ability to meet performance and scaling requirements of demanding workloads and ever growing data pools. Get even more with High I/O Storage Classes.

Data Protection

Volumes provide ways for data protection and disaster recovery to secure data availability. With features such as snapshots, replication, backup, and encryption, your data is safe.

Easy Use Icon

Efficiency

Reduce your IT costs and only pay for the storage you need. Resize your Volumes as soon as it needs more capacity. Make the most of your space, in the most cost-effective way.

Use-Case Scenarios

Resilience for Cloud Servers

Each Cloud Server’s data, including operating system and application files, is stored on one or more Volumes. These Volumes are attached to the VMs running on any hypervisor nodes.

Volumes automatically get replicated across multiple nodes within the Ceph-Storage cluster. This replication ensures that even if one node or underlying hardware fails, the data remains accessible from other nodes.

When a hypervisor node crashes, the VMs running on that node may be temporarily unavailable. However, because the Cloud Servers data is stored on Volumes with replication, it can failover to healthy hypervisor nodes. This minimizes service disruption and downtime.

Databases and Big Data

Todays websites and applications experiences increased demand on its database server. They need a storage solution that can handle data growth and provide consistent performance.

Cloud Volumes provide scalable block storage that can be easily resized to accommodate the growing dataset without the need to stop the database server.

Although a flash storage on a local server might offer more peak performance to one MySQL instance, Cloud Volumes makes it easy to scale up to run many MySQL instances. Persistent Cloud Volumes ensures the data continues to exist even if the database instances goes away. Cloud Volumes also feature replication and to protect against certain kind of failures and snapshots to support quick backup and restore of databases.

Protected and ensured data

Operating Systems

Distributed and Replicated

All data is replicated three times and distributed across failure domains. Replicas are never stored on the same disk, host or availability zone.

Usage Examples

Create Your Volume using a Command Line Interface (CLI), the REST-API, or our Webinterface.

OpenStack CLI

Use the OpenStack CLI command to create a new volume with a given storage class and size.

openstack volume create --type Ceph-Encrypted-High-IOPS --size 500 myVolume

REST-API

The provided REST-API allows you to create an Cloud Volume. There are also libraries for the most popular programming languages available.

curl -X POST https://cloud.netways.de:8776/v3/{project_id}/volumes
    -H "Content-Type: application/json"
    -H "X-Auth-Token: $TOKEN"
    -d '{
        "volume": {
          "size": 10,

Nice to know

How are Volumes managed in OpenStack?
In OpenStack, volumes are managed by the Block Storage service, which provides APIs for creating, attaching, detaching, and deleting volumes. The Block Storage service also supports various volume types, such as solid-state drives (SSDs) and magnetic disk drives, to provide different levels of performance and cost.

Volumes are commonly used for storing data that needs to be persisted across instances, such as databases, application data, and user files. They can also be used for creating snapshots, which are point-in-time copies of a volume that can be used for backup and disaster recovery purposes.

Why is object storage useful?
Object storage is useful for storing large amounts of unstructured data, such as images, videos, log files, and backups. It provides scalable, durable, and highly available storage that can be accessed from anywhere over the internet. It can also be integrated with other OpenStack services, such as Compute, to provide a complete cloud solution.
What is local disk storage?
This is the default volume type in OpenStack, where an instance uses the local disk of the compute node. Local disk volumes are created and deleted automatically when instances are created and deleted.
